So, what does everyone think about the gas price increase. Please don't come here and say "it sucks" "it's BS"....... Please give some thoughts and opinions on the issue.

My thoughts were summed up nicely by a one Mr. Boortz...

TIME TO START DRILLING

OPEC's acting secretary general was quoted yesterday as saying that crude oil could hit $80 a barrel within two years. Gasoline prices in the past few days have shot up 30 cents a gallon, to around $2.09 in the Midwest for the cheap stuff. Oil is at $53 a barrel right now....imagine what a gallon of gasoline will cost when it hits $80. It's still not the most expensive it has ever been, but it could be cheaper.

Yet there is a solution to this. It's called producing our own oil, and not relying on OPEC for so much of it. It's time to send the oil rigs north, to start drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge (ANWR,) where, by some estimates, there are between 6 and 16 billion barrels of oil. The area where the drilling would occur is but 8% of the entire refuge. The other 92% wouldn't be touched. Time to start drilling for oil.

Next, it's time to start building refineries. Lots of 'em. Big, huge, smelly gasoline refineries, where enough capacity exists to offset the summer driving season squeeze. That will also bring prices down. And last but not least, it's time for the EPA and all 50 states to settle on a single gasoline blend to be used year round...to stop the nonsensical practice of requiring oil companies to make 50 different blends of gasoline.

Of course, it's unlikely any of this will happen. Perhaps when gas hits $3 or $4 a gallon, people will start to think about it. Just maybe.

It still not as bad as it could be for us, England pays 3x what we do per gallon.

not meant to be some tree-hugger view point even tho' it may sound that way...

if everyone stopped buying hummers and large SUVs, if everyone stopped taking that gas-guzzler just to get down the street (maybe walk or ride bicycle/motorcycle), if the car manufacturs actually focused on building cars and trucks that didn't use much or any gas, if..blah, blah, blah...then we might not care as much about the gas price since we wouldn't be using as much of it.

of course, everything else goes up in price so why shouldn't the gas? and if we produced our own, as thor states in his post, we wouldn't....

oh hell.... i'm going for coffee to calm down.

I agree with ckozo. Not every soccer mom needs an excursion or a hummer.

I unfortunately use alot of gas in my pickup truck. I don't drive it though. I am "Bus-Man".

Another part of the problem that alot of people don't know about is that we only have a few oil refineries. At one point there was close to two hundred that competed against each other in pricing, now there is like two dozen all owned by only four companies that price fix.

What about these rumors from back in the day.....about carbs making cars run 70+mpg and shit like that. I know the oil companies had to buy those up and get rid of them....but I am sure with technology today, someone could make some shit like that and do the world some good! All I know, if I am still at the same job in 6 months to 1yr. We will be working at home and it will save me around 1700-2000 a yr in gas alone.

Screw that. I will always have a loud V8, even up to the point where I'm fighting for gas like Mad Max. It goes up but there isn't a thing you can do about it.

6-16 billion barrels available

20 million barrels consumed per day

6 000 000 000 barrels / (2 000 000 barrels / day)

= 300 days < 1year

16 000 000 000 barrels / (2 000 000 barrels / day)

= 800 days (just over 2 years)

seems like a lot of trouble for little impact, better to save that as rainy day insurance.... like when there is none and we might need to power certain essentials like tanks and aircraft(strategic reserves)

:iamwithstupid Exactly, and it would take aprox ten years and a shit load cash to finance a pipeline construction project to extract that oil. :hammerhead

This is so true, I was watching on discovery a year back a guy invented an engine that ran off of water. Yep WATER!!! But like so many others before him he sold out and sold his water powered engine to you guessed it an oil company for a very large piece of change. That company either destroyed it or put it up on a shelf with other engines never to be produced.

I think the answer is not how to bring oil prices down, It's how do we get rid of or use in place of oil. Electric, Water, Natural Gas, engines are all good ways but just like oil, if these became the case you would see the costs of these other resources skyrocket, as federal and states could not survive without the increase. The tax you pay for gasoline goes to re-paving or should I say patching :rolleyes roads.

Anyone hear on the news a few weeks ago, the want to put a feature in the new hybrid cars that when you fill up the vehicle the pump connects and exchanges info from the car and you will pay taxes according to how many miles you have traveled since the last time you filled up? States say they are losing too much in precious tax funds because these cars don't use nearly as much fuel. So they need another way to get the owners of these vehicles to pay as much as everyone else is paying in. DUH thats the whole fawkin reason for buying a hybrid, to save money on gas prices.
